Our crew is something special, a handful of talents and personalities that will enrich any trip. They are fun experienced professionals that will lead you through exciting class III/IV whitewater, hike you to mountain top vista's, share historical tales of years past, and relax around the campfire. We hand select our guides based on river experience, safety certifications, outdoor skills, and a personality that fosters team work and fun. Our goal is to offer you an exceptional river trip that is filled with incredible memories but also extremely safe. Clint Frank, Outfitter/Owner

Clint has been guiding Idaho whitewater for over 20 years and has spent the last 18 seasons on the Middle Fork. His career began at the age of 18 while attending the University of Montana where he was a well known guide on the Lochsa River. His knowledge and love of the Middle Fork is contagious and he actively guides on 75% of the trips. His whitewater resume includes guide licenses on the Lochsa, Selway, Main and Middle Fork of the Salmon Rivers. In the off season Clint is a professional fire fighter for the city of Sandpoint where he lives with his wife Molly, and their two children, Piper and Max.

Certifications: Emergency Medical Technician I-level, Rope Rescue Technician I,II,& III, Swift Water Technician, Ski Patrolman level 3 Schweitzer Mountain Resort, Professional Firefighter State of Idaho I, II, & III, American Heart Association BLS Instructor, BS in Forestry; U of Montana.

 

 

Molly O'Toole Frank, Outfitter/Food Coordinator/Office Manager----along with Piper and Max

Our family is the inspiration that makes all of us strive to do our best. It is Molly's behind the scenes work that makes us shine when we are on the river. With incredible recipe cards, food prep, and unbelievable organization, Molly is a huge part to the success of our family based outfit. Piper & Max are great kids who are excited to be along for the ride.  In the off season Molly keeps up on MFRT business, testing recipes, and running dogs or children in her hometown of Sandpoint, ID. Piper is a sweet and studious 8th grader who loves all of life's activities (especially soccer). Max is a football & basketball crazed 6th grader who constantly drills his parents with questions and statistics.

Robert "Scoop" Carlson

Scoop will be returning to the Middle Fork for his 21st season with MFRT. Scoop has many seasons, stories, and memories of the Middle Fork country, yet each year, in fact each trip, he finds to be different. "Everything from the weather, the clients, the river, in fact the whole territory is very dynamic, ever changing, challenging, and fresh. There is no such thing as a redundant day on the Middle Fork. I feel as if I can almost taste the energy of living when I am here." Scoop spends his off season as a back country ski guide. He lives with his wife Kathy, and his four darling little girls in Driggs, Idaho.

Jon Green

Jon has spent 17 years guiding on the Middle Fork!  He lives in Salmon, ID where he learned young the beauty of our great state.  Jon has blessed us with his quiet knowledge and sure handedness in all aspects of river running.  We are excited to see Jon return season after season, he's an excellent guide and great member of our crew!

Jack Christiansen
 
"I love all types of water, fresh and salty, quick and still.  I'll use whatever means possible to enjoy it.  Raft, kayak, drift boat, or surfboard, if it keeps me floating, I'll take it for a spin." Raised on the beaches of California he turned his love for water into his lifestyle:  lifeguard, surf instructor, sea kayak guide, river kayak guide, and evolved into A River Guide!  This will be Jacks 7th Season on the Middle Fork, we are so happy to have his enthusiasm for water on our crew!

Jon Lynch

Jon is returning for his 6th season with MFRT. He has guided for 13 years on Montana and Idaho waters including the Clark Fork, Smith, and Lochsa Rivers. Jon comes to us from Missoula, MT where he lives with his wife Tara and their two young children, River & Haze. In the off season Jon works for a Missoula based home builder where he can be found building people's dreams.

Aaron Gordon

This will be Aaron's 11th season guiding in Idaho and 7th summer with MFRT.  His river experience includes the Lochsa, Selway, and Main Salmon as well as many rivers in Colorado. During the summer he tries to spend as much time as he can on the water fishing and rafting and loves to tie flies almost as much as he loves to fly fish!  Aaron lives in Sandpoint, Idaho with his lovely wife Rachel (whom also loves to tie flies) and their two beautiful young girls.  Aaron spends his off season as the Sandpoint High School Band Director.  Whew, he has a lot of energy.

Laurie

 

 

Laurie Delaney

Laurie will be returning for a couple trips with us this summer, we grab her when we can, we love her on our team! This is one tough girl who knows how to row a boat.  Prior to the Middle Fork, Laurie spent 10 summers guiding in Alaska, Utah, and Colorado.  She grew up in Glenwood Springs, CO chasing her mom down rivers. During her off season she is an avalanche forecaster for the Utah Department of Transportation.

Will Sutton

Will is a fantastic fishing guide and one heck of an Ultimate Frisbee player, a world champion 5 times over. Will is also creator of the "Middle Fork Mutant" a dry fly that is irresistible to Middle Fork trout. Will lives in Missoula, MT with his wife Jona and their two adorable young children.  This will be Will's 14th season on the Middle Fork with MFRT.  It's always a great trip when Wil is on it!

Kristen Baunsgard

Kristin will be joining us for a couple trips this summer, another one of our favorite guides that follows her spirit of adventure, this summer she will be spending 1 month in China to open a new river expedition on the Tibetan Plateau.  Kristin will be guiding for us as much as she can then head to the mighty Grand Canyon through October.  We wish her safe travels, and look forward to hearing stories.

Our Menu is superb and we are starting to think many of our guests return just for the food. Here is a sample of some of the delicacies we will share with you during the week, Bon Appetite!

Breakfast on the river is served at 8 am. Fresh locally roasted coffee, tea, and juice is ready by 6:30 am. We serve homemade Cinnamon Rolls, Middle Fork Muffin Melts (you'll have to join us to enjoy these), Peaches and Cream French Toast, Breakfast Burritos, and Sweet Potato Crust Quiche for our main entrees. We always have a side of bacon, sausage, or ham for the non vegetarian guest. All breakfasts are also served with fresh fruits which include cantaloupe, kiwi, bananas, honey dew, casaba, and berries. A cereal bar is also available.

Lunch on the river is served between 12-1 pm.  Lunch includes fresh deli meats like pastrami, ham, turkey, roast beef, & salami that are served with Locally made breads by Oddfellows Bakery in Salmon, ID. Salads are the real treat at lunch and may include Thai  Noodle, Caesar, Caprese, and Taco Salad. Other delicacies that you can look forward to are smoked trout, delicious cheese platters, hummus & tadziki sauces, and Molly's homemade cookies. Standard fare such as chips, juice, and fruit are served every day as well.

Apre River. Appetizer's are served each day at 5 to 5:30 pm and are served with our complimentary cocktail bar. Appetizers include fresh veggies and dip (peanut sauce/blue cheese), artichokes w/lemon mayo, smoked salmon w/capers, edamame w/soy, and sliced pork w/hot mustard. We also have a mix of basic staples such as pretzels, nuts, & tortilla chips with guacamole & salsas.

Dinner on the river is served between 7 to 7:30 pm. and is an unbelievable dinning experience. Dinner consists of fresh cut steaks, crab cakes, seared duck, dutch oven pizza, and herb crusted salmon that are paired with tasty wines. Dinners have a mix of wonderful greens that include fresh salad's and healthy veggies. Dutch oven breads and tasty desserts finish off a culinary experience that will truly amaze and surprise even the most discerning guest.

 

Our trips are licensed by the U.S Forest Service under a special use permit through the Salmon Challis National Forest. Prior to your launch day, campsites will be per-assigned by the Forest Service, this allows us to plan our day accordingly based on the amount of river miles we need to cover from camp to camp. We travel between 15-20 miles a day which usually takes 5 to 6 hours.

Morning

A typical day begins each morning at first light (6:30 am), the guide staff will brew a fresh pot of coffee and start a fire for guests to enjoy. Early risers relish this quiet time as the camp is still, listening to the sound of the river and taking in the beauty of the canyon as the sun rise warms the hills. A delicious breakfast is served between 8-8:30 am and camp is now alive with people milling about and enjoying the serenity of another incredible campsite. During breakfast the lead guide will give you a quick morning talk to let you know how many miles we will be traveling to the next camp, the day's highlights, and what to pack in your day bag for the day's activities. After breakfast the guides will clean up and break down camp while you pack your overnight bag and break down your tent, we shoot to be on the river by 9:30 am.

The River

While on the river guests can enjoy fishing or relaxing from an oar frame boat, the camaraderie and team work of a paddle boat, or the excitement of running the river on their own in an inflatable kayak. The Middle Fork is chocked full of rapids and there are a couple major ones every day that will get your heart pumping and challenge both you and the guides. We plan a lunch stop around 12:30 to stretch the legs, take a swim, and enjoy another wonderful meal. We always pick a lunch spot that has an interesting side hike to either Indian pictographs, hot springs, a waterfall, or historical cabin. After lunch we will float for 2 to 2.5 half more hours over gin clear waters that run deep through one spectacular canyon after another. As we float, keep your eyes perched for animals in the hills, raptors in the sky, or the next exciting horizon line on this world class river.

Camp

We will arrive in camp each day around 4 pm and you will find camp set up with tents, chairs, and tables waiting for your enjoyment. Now just grab your overnight bag, a deluxe thermarest pad for sleeping, and pick your home for the night. We set up 4 man tents, but plan for 2 to a tent so you have plenty of room. Once you get settled in there are many fun camp activities to pick from; a game of horseshoes, cards, fishing, swimming, hiking, reading, or just take a nap. We plan for a 5 o'clock complimentary cocktail bar served with mouth watering appetizers. Dinner is planned for 7 o'clock and is as decadent as the incredible setting we share each meal in, truly an outdoor dinning room that has no equal. After dinner unwind by the campfire with a mouthwatering dutch oven dessert and a cup of tea or coffee and share in the stories of the days adventures. As the stars shine bright above, fall asleep dazing up at the sky and listening to the soothing sound of the river, Sweet Dreams!

Family raft trips are truly our favorite. We have a young family and love seeing the world through the eyes of our children, always exciting, mostly inspiring, never dull. If you want to experience a family vacation you and your kids will never forget, the Middle Fork is certainly that trip and more. Imagine floating through the lower 48's largest wilderness area past incredible canyons, casting for hungry trout, while running world class whitewater with your kids right by your side!  Once in camp, take a swim, hike to a hot spring, play a game of horseshoes, or just simply relax and enjoy each other. This is a trip with no cell phones or video games,  it is a trip about an incredible river that has the power to bring families together creating memories that will last a lifetime. June trips with high water are good for children 14 and up while July and August launches are perfect for families with children of all ages.

Minimum age is 6 years old.

Children 18 and under are $250 off on all river trips.
